BS EN 62305

The British Standard for Lightning Protection is the foundation for all our system designs and working practices

BS EN 62305 is a European standard for lightning protection, providing comprehensive guidelines for safeguarding structures and electrical systems from lightning strikes.

It is divided into four parts: general principles, risk management, physical damage to structures and life hazard, and electrical and electronic systems within buildings.

An introduction to
BS EN 62305 - 2011

Protection Against Lightning

From warehouses, to residential apartment blocks, leisure centres, universities and hospitals our team have decades of experience protecting them.

Each part of the standard from the general principles which establishs an overview of the document to parts 3 to 4 which give a detailed technical explanation of how the standard should be applied.

The component parts of the standard are as follows:

Part 1 – General Principles
Part 2 – Risk Management
Part 3 – Physical damage to structures and life hazard
Part 4 – Electrical and electronic systems within structures

BS EN 62305 Part 1

General Principles

This first part of the standard sets out the basic principles and gives an explanation for the rest of the standard.

The first part lays the foundation for the overall standard and gives an overview of how to design a lightning protection system in accordance with parts 2 to 4 including the parameters used to design a system and how to select the appropriate protection measures.

Risk Management

Risk calculations form the primary starting point for all our system designs and enable us to assess your projects requirements for lightning and surge protection effectively.

We take into account multiple factors when assessing a structure, these include geographic location, dimensions, usage, occupancy numbers and structural makeup. Utilising industry standard risk calculation software we are then able to effectively establish what level of protection is required to meet parts 3 and 4 of BS EN 62305 and protect against:

  • the loss of human life;
  • electrical surges which may damage system or equipment;
  • structural damage;

BS EN 62305 Part 3

Physical damage to structures and life hazard

Protecting the structure from damage and its occupants from harm based on the outcome of the risk calculation forms a critical and substantial part of the standard.

Classes of lightning protection system range from 1 to 4 with 4 being the lowest level of protection and the most common. This part of the standard comprises of 4 distinct sections:

  • Air Termination
  • Down Conductors
  • Earthing

Also covered in this section are several considerations relating to the specific structural elements of a building and how to accommodate these within a system design or utilise them as part of the system.

These include:

  • Rolling Sphere Method
  • Air Termination Methods (Mesh, catenary and protective angles)
  • Tall Structures & Coronal Bands
  • Cantilevered Elements
  • Natural Features
  • Earthing & Bonding
  • Maintenance & Inspection
  • Explosive

Electrical and electronic systems within structures

Protecting your structures electrical systems and critical services forms a key part of the British Standard.

We work with many international companies, local authorities and organisations where protecting their internal electrical systems and equipment is of paramount importance. Loss of service for a hospitals operating theatres or critical care units can cost lives and protecting critical electrical services such as telecommuncations and internet providers keep the services we use every day operational.

At Bacons we work with trusted surge suppliers to provide comprehensive and competitive surge solutions that protect your system and goods in the event of a direct strike or a strike to the surrounding area.

Our surge solutions safeguard a wide range of services or equipment:

  • healthcare services;
  • public infrastructure;
  • IT & Telecoms equipment;
  • audio and home entertainment equipment;
  • white goods
